3 months ago, local builder, Dave Thompson, was asked to sort out the gutters on a farmhouse in Cheshire for Mr and Mrs Carter. Their old plastic system had cracked and sagged after just ten years, leaving damp marks on the brickwork and turning the yard into a waterfall whenever it rained. Dave took one look and knew plastic wasn’t the answer. He recommended aluminium instead. In his words: “I’ve lost count of the number of plastic systems I’ve ripped out. Aluminium costs a bit more up front, but you fit it once and you don’t get the call backs.”
The Carters went for a black powder coated system to tie in with the windows and soffits. It was fitted in a day, and the difference was immediate. No leaks, a sharper finish and peace of mind that it will last for decades without needing to be touched. We worked with Dave every step of the way and Stafford Rainwater Systems carried out the install, which meant the job was done properly from the start.
Plastic might be cheap and quick to fit, but it rarely stands the test of time. The sun makes it brittle, the cold splits it and the joints always seem to work loose. The Carters had already patched theirs up twice before finally deciding to move away from plastic. Aluminium is a different story. It does not warp or fade, it will not rust, and with a powder-coated finish it can be matched to almost any home. It is lighter than steel too, and with the weather we get here in the UK that extra strength really matters.
For the Carters, the change has been worth every penny. The farmhouse now looks the part and they do not have to worry every time it rains. Builders like Dave prefer it as well because the lengths are straighter, the joints stronger, and there are fewer call backs.
Another big plus is sustainability. Aluminium is one hundred percent recyclable, and most of what is used today has already been through the process at least once. Compare that to plastic which usually ends up in a landfill and the choice is clear.
So whether you are a homeowner fed up of leaks or a builder looking for fewer headaches, aluminium is a smart move. It looks better, it lasts longer and it pays for itself in the long run.
