View full detailsCast iron Victorian Ogee guttering is a highly recognisable profile that features the characteristic sweeping curve associated with classic Victorian architecture. It plays an important role in restoration work where original detailing needs to be matched closely. The weight and shape of cast iron give this system an authentic presence while still offering strong performance under heavy rainfall conditions. With appropriate protective coating it remains durable and visually appealing throughout years of exposure. Designers installers and conservation specialists choose this profile because it preserves historic value while still delivering essential rainwater protection. When fitted with matching cast iron downpipes it completes an accurate traditional gutter line that supports the long term care of period buildings.
Where is Victorian Ogee typically used?
In late-19th-century and Edwardian stock where the sharper ogee suits brick detailing and heavy cornices.
Any special bracket strategy?
Keep the heavier front lip supported. Double-bracket near angles and outlets to control deflection under snow or wind load.
Paint strategy for visible cornice lines?
Factory two-pack keeps sharp arrises and reduces site time. Primed supply is an option where heritage topcoats are mandated.
What standards and finishes do Alumasc cast iron rainwater products comply with?
All Alumasc Apex Heritage cast iron gutters, downpipes and fittings are manufactured to BS 460:2002 for cast iron rainwater goods and supplied either factory primed or with a high-performance two-pack painted finish. Factory finishes are certified for long-term protection and colour consistency.
What are the typical lengths, bracket centres and falls for installation?
Most gutters and downpipes are supplied in 1.83 m (6 ft) lengths. Gutters are typically bracketed at 915 mm centres with extra brackets either side of joints, outlets and angles, and set to a fall of roughly 1:600 to 1:350.
How are joints made and sealed on site?
Traditional spigot-into-socket joints are made using a low-modulus silicone or rubberised bitumen mastic, then bolted through the pre-drilled joint holes using corrosion-resistant bolts and washers.
What about durability, repainting and lifecycle?
Cast iron is extremely strong, vandal-resistant and dimensionally stable. Life expectancy is typically 40+ years with correct installation and periodic maintenance. Factory-painted finishes minimise site time; primed goods can be site painted to the required scheme.
Are Alumasc cast iron systems suitable for heritage and sustainable projects?
Yes. They are widely used on listed and conservation properties because they replicate traditional profiles and details, and cast iron is 100% recyclable at end of life.
